Early Life of Sam Manekshaw

Sam Manekshaw was born on April 3, 1914, in Amritsar. Manekshaw was raised in a Parsi family, his father was a doctor by profession. Manekshaw wanted to become a doctor like his father, but his father refused and that’s when Sam Manekshaw chose to join the British Indian Army. Soon, Sam Manekshaw became a legendary army officer. In his military career, Sam Manekshaw fought four wars and was awarded the highest rank of Field Marshal in the Indian Army.

Sam Manekshaw wanted to study in London and become a doctor, but after his father’s disagreement he chose to join the military. Manekshaw attended Sherwood College, Nainital and Hindu Sabha College in Amritsar. He was selected in the first batch of 15 cadets selected for the newly formed Indian Military Academy in Dehradun.

Sam and Siloo’s love tale started rather by accident. Silloo visited her brother-in-law, Colonel Kaikhushru Bharucha, a physician in the British Indian Army, and sister Tehmi in Lahore in 1937. She met Captain Sam Manekshaw, a young and charming officer, during a dinner party that was held during her visit. She was instantly drawn to Captain Manekshaw’s charm, and confidence.Their chemistry developed right away. Even in his early years, Sam’s charisma and sense of humour won her over. Sam and Silloo were married in Bombay on April 22, 1939, following a two-year relationship. It marked the start of a lifelong companionship that would endure distance, and wars.

Sam Manekshaw was commissioned in the British Indian Army in  1934. His heroism in the World War II gained him instant recognition and praise, Sam Manekshaw was awarded the Military Cross for his heroic role in the World War II. During the 1947 Indo-Pakistan War Sam Manekshaw played a vital, he insisted the government on air-lifting the Indian troops to Jammu and Kashmir to prevent its capture. In 1969 Sam Manekshaw became the seventh army chief. Manekshaw also commanded the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, and under his command in 1971 Indo-Pakistan War the Indian Troops secured victory. On January 1, 1973; Sam Manekshaw became the first officer in the Indian Army to be promoted to the highest rank of Field Marshal.

Life After Retirement

After serving for over four decades in Indian Army Sam Manekshaw retired on January 15, 1973. He then settled in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu with his wife Siloo Manekshaw.

Later on, July 27, 2008 Sam Bahadur Manekshaw passed away at the age of 94 years.
